PI ROPE wheelset 29″ FADE 6-hole Lucky Jack 6Ters SLS4 26 | Black Premium Edition
A cross country wheelset with textile spokes, can that work? So far, there have been many approaches from well-known manufacturers, but all of them have produced unsatisfactory results. The young and extremely innovative think tank PI ROPE from Chemnitz, Saxony, has made the impossible possible in cooperation with the Technical University of Chemnitz. The result is a textile spoke made of braided Vectran synthetic fibers.
The material is extremely robust, resistant to aging and weathering, and has better mechanical properties than its steel counterpart. The tensile strength and damping is many times higher, but the weight of the fibers is five times lower. These are optimal prerequisites for a very light, but nevertheless hard-wearing wheel, as the rotating masses are minimized in the important outer areas and the flexibility of the Vectran textile spokes prevents permanent plastic deformation at high peak loads.
Thanks to the black PI PROTECT coating of the Vectran yarn before the braiding process, the properties of the textile spokes are improved. The treated surface not only looks good, it also offers better UV protection and reduces the impact of adverse weather conditions.
In addition, the abrasion resistance against external damage, such as that caused by stones and branches on the trail, increases. Mechanical loads that occur are better absorbed and ensure greater durability. The resulting increase in rigidity is particularly noticeable when cornering. Another plus, the processing of the textile spoke could be qualitatively optimized again.
The hubs, which can accommodate the special ends of the PI ROPE spokes, were specially developed in cooperation with the well-known component manufacturer NEWMEN. The long-lasting bearings are pressed in precisely and stress-free at the factory, so that the often tedious adjustment of the axial bearing clearance is no longer necessary. This has increased the level of user-friendliness. The design of the freewheel is completely different from the previous model. The goal was low noise. The result was the FADE ratchet system. 3 pawls engage in a new type of tooth profile. To increase durability, the diameter was enlarged and the individual pawls were short and wide. Thus, the resulting forces are distributed over a larger area and the hub is even released for e-bikes and tough enduro use.
Duke has managed to improve the Lucky Jack compared to the SLS3 version. In doing so, they have once again pushed the apparently technically possible limits. A 26mm wide rim weighing just 285g is a direct challenge to the competition.
How did the French do this? They took a closer look at the individual elements of the rim and looked for optimization options. In particular, a new resin was used. This not only made it possible to slim down, but also to increase impact resistance at the same time. Similar to the SLS3 production process, post-processing or painting is not necessary here either.
The makers of PI ROPE have confidence in their products and grant a 3-year guarantee on all material and manufacturing defects as well as a 2-year crash replacement. Technical specifications
